Family History

Frank Gregory was born in 1888 he was the son of the late Samuel a coal miner and Martha Gregory née Varley of Cross Street, Hill Top, Eastwood. Samuel was born in 1846 at Brinsley he died in 1911 aged 64 yrs, Martha Varley was born in 1853 at Selston, they were married on 1st August 1870 at St Helens Church at Selston, they had 11 children, 1 of which sadly died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census Frank is found in barracks in India, he is serving with the 1st battalion York & Lancaster Regiment, he is 23 yrs of age and is single. In the same census his widow mother Martha is living at 62 Breach, Eastwood, she is 58 yrs and is living with three of her daughters. Frank's next of kin at the time of his death was his brother George., his mother Martha had died in 1915 aged 62 yrs.

Military History

Private Frank Gregory enlisted in Derby on 6th June 1907 giving his age as 19 yrs and 4 months, he was a coal miner, posted to the York and Lancaster Regiment he served in India for six years and three months. He landed in Flanders in January 1915 and received an arm wound (gun shot wound to right arm) near Hill 60 on 23rd April 1915. He was returned to England for treatment and later returned to France on 16th December 1915 and was killed in action on 25th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
