Luther Green was born in 1893 the son of William a coal miner hewer and Emma Green née Hill and the brother of John Robert, Blanche, Arthur, Thomas Archie, Lillian, William, Albert and Mabel Green. In 1911 they lived at 3 Bentinck Street Annesley Woodhouse Nottinghamshire. William was born in 1868 at Kirkby, Emma Green was born in 1872 also at Kirkby, married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 9 children. Luther married Hilda Mary Holloway (born 29th May 1897) in 1917 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 33 Bentinck Cottages Kirkby in Ashfield and had a son Luther Green, born on 27th December 1918 (following his fathers death) Commencing 2nd December 1918 his widow Hilda was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Luther Green enlisted on 1st September 1914 at Hucknall giving his age as 21 yrs and 260 days, his occupation as a miner. Serving with the Leicester Regiment he went to France on 29th July 1915, he returned to England on 14th April 1916. He returned to France on 15th July 1916 and again returned to England on 28th May 1917. Finally returned to France on 16th July 1917 he was killed in action on 19th April 1918 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
He was awarded his Military Medal in the field on 26th April 1917.
