Family History

William Henry Tipping was born in 1892 he was the son of Frank and Kate Tipping née Chadbourne who had five children of whom four were still living at the time of the 1911 census. Frank, who was a railway labourer (platelayer), had been born in Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, while his wife had been born in Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district. In 1901 they lived at Duke's Cottage, Sutton in Ashfield, with their three children, Edith Ellen (10), William Henry (9) and Alice Elizabeth (4), all of whom were born in Sutton in Ashfield. They were at the same address in 1911 with their four children, Edith, William, Alice and Dorothy Martha (5, b. Sutton in Ashfield). Also in the household was a boarder, Charles Hornbuckle (23). William's mother died on 15 January 1959, aged 90, and his father on 13 June 1960, also aged 90.

Military History

Private William Henry Tipping enlisted ta Mansfield he was wounded at Ypres on 28 July 1917 and died in Edgbaston Hospital, Derby, the following October. He was buried in Sutton-in-Ashfield cemetery. He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Inscription on headstone in Sutton in Ashfield cemetery: 'In loving memory of Pte. William Henry, the beloved son of Frank and Kate Tipping, wounded at Ypres (France), July 28th 1917, died Oct. 24th 1917, aged 25 years. His young life he gave for all. Also of Kate Tipping beloved wife & mother died Jan. 15th 1959, aged 90 years. Also of Frank Tipping beloved husband & father died June 13th 1960 aged 90 years. Reunited.'
