William was born in 1895 in Newton and was the son of John a cowman and Mary Kirkham, née Jephson of East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire. His father John was born in 1867 in Smalley, Derbyshire and his mother Mary Jephson was born in 1866 in Woodborough, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration area. They went on to have 4 children :- Lizzie b1891 Woodborough, Edith b1892 Carlton, Herbert b1893 Carlton and William b1895 Newton. In the 1911 census the family are living in Newton and are shown as John 44 yrs a cowman on a farm , he is living with his wife Mary 45 yrs and their son William 16 yrs a groom,
Private William Kirkham, enlisted on 14th April 1913 at Carlton and served with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He was embodied for service following the outbreak of war . He embarked from Southampton on 28th February 1915 and joined the British Expeditionary Force. He died as a result of wounds received whilst in action on 14th August 1915. He is buried in Hop Store Cemetery plot 1, row B, grave 29
In memoriam published on 14th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- KIRKHAM. – In loving memory of Private William Kirkham, of Newton, died of wounds received in action August 14th, 1915. They miss him most who loved him best. – Father, mother, sisters, and brother. “KIRKHAM. – In respectful remembrance of William Kirkham, 8th Sherwood Foresters, killed August 14th, 1915.
