Morris Freedman

Maurice Freedman was born in 1898 at Leeds and was the son of Soloman a tailor and Annie Freedman née Nemenchinsky of Lime Villa, Boundary Road, Newark. His father Soloman Freedman was born in 1859 in Poland and his mother Annie was born in 1861 also in Poland they were both Russia Jews they were married in 1879 believed in Poland and had four children born in Poland, Sarah b1880,Simon b1881, Isaac b1883 and Joe b1885. Soloman brought his wife family to England around 1891 and settled in Leeds and went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Leeds, Harry b1892, Betsy b1894, Rachel b1896, Maurice b1898 and Eli born 1901. On 20th March 1903 whilst living at 16 Elmwood Street, Leeds Soloman 41 yrs and a tailor applied for Naturalisation for his family and on 15th May 1903 made a declaration for naturalisation. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lytham Villas, New Balderton and are shown as Soloman 52 yrs a tailor, he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs and their children , Harry 19 yrs a sewing machinist tailor, Betsy 17 yrs a sewing machinist tailor, Rachel 15 yrs a button holer for a tailor, Morris 13 yrs a tailors baister Eli 10 yrs a scholar, also living with them is their married daughter Sarah Sherman 31 yrs a button holer for a tailor and her daughter Esther 7 yrs. Soloman stated he and his wife had been married 32 yrs and had had 9 children, one of which had died.
