Family History

John George Freeman was born in 1891 the son of Abraham a carter and Elizabeth Freeman née Garratt of 21 Vernon Road Kirkby in Ashfield. Abraham was born in 1849 at Dalestorth, Elizabeth Garrattt was born in 1855 at Kirkby in Ashfield, married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, Elizabeth brought a child to the marriage, Henry Garratt born 1881 they went on to have a further 6 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving children were Fred b1894 and Albert b1894. In 1911 the family lived at 21 Vernon Road, Kirkby in Ashfield.

Military History

Private John George Freeman, (his army service records survive however it is mostly unreadable), he enlisted on 12th December 1915 at Kirkby in Ashfield giving his age as 24 yrs and 290 days, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 15th February 1916 at Derby. Landing in France on 26th February 1917 he was killed in action on 21st March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
