Family History

George William was the son of Samuel Marriott and Susannah Marriott (nee Bull). His father Samuel was the son of John (d. 30 September 1902) and Hannah Marriott (nee Roberts), both of Cropwell Butler, who were married in 1851 (O/N/D Bingham) and had at least nine children. Samuel was born in 1864 and baptised on 6 November 1864 at Holy Trinity Church, Tithby (Cropwell cum Tithby). In 1881 at the age of 16 Samuel was a cowman and agricultural labourer living with his parents at The Lodge, Cropwell Butler. His father John was also an agricultural labourer. Samuel married Susannah Bull on 27 January 1886 at St Peter's, Anslow, Staffordshire (1886 J/F/M Burton upon Trent Staffs). Susannah was the daughter of George and Martha Bull and was born in Stapenhill, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire; she was baptised on 16 September 1866 at Holy Trinity, Anslow, Staffordshire. Samuel and Susannah had ten children who were all born in Cropwell Butler and with the possible exception of the two youngest children, Robert and Arthur, were baptised at Holy Trinity, Tithby: Miriam b. 27 October 1886 (O/N/D Bingham) bap. 29 December 1886, George William birth registered 1889 (J/F/M Bingham) bap. 2 December 1888, Joseph b. 1890 probably 23 November (O/N/D Bingham) bap. 8 November 1890, Samuel Henry b. 1892 probably 12 June (J/A/S Bingham) bap. 14 July 1892, May b. 1894 (A/M/J Bingham) bap. 15 July 1894, Frederick b. 1896 (A/M/J Bingham) bap. 10 May 1896, Mary Winifred b. 1897 (O/N/D Bingham) bap. 21 November 1897, John Leonard b. 1900 (J/A/S Bingham) bap. 1 July 1900 (d. 1916), Robert b. 1902 (J/A/S Bingham) and Arthur b. 1904 (A/M/J Bingham). The birth registration records for all but Miriam (1886) and May (1884) give the mother's maiden name, Bull. Their parents were living in Cropwell Butler at the time the children were baptised with the exception of Samuel (1892) when their residence was given on the baptismal record as Nottingham. In 1891, five years after their marriage, Samuel (26) an agricultural labourer, and Susannah (25) were living at Ratcliffe Road Cottage, Cropwell Butler, with their three children Miriam (4), George (2) and Joseph (7 months). Samuel had lived at Ratcliffe Road Cottage with his parents in 1871 when he was four years old (ten years later the family, including Samuel, was living at The Lodge, Cropwell Butler. An entry on the Patients Admission Registers in 1897 records the admission of a Susannah Marriott on 16 February 1897, discharged 15 June the same year. Susannah's sixth child, Frederick, had been born the previous year (probably April/May 1896) and her seventh child, Mary Winifred) was born at the end of 1897; she had had seven children in nine years. By 1901 the family was living at The Elms, Cropwell Butler. Samuel (36) was a stock man on a farm, Susannah was now 35. Seven of their eight children were living at home: George (12), Joseph (10), Samuel (8), May (6), Frederick (5), Mary (3) and John Leonard (10 months). Their oldest child, Miriam (14), was a domestic servant in the household of Richard Derry, farmer, at Tithby. Their sons Robert and Arthur were born in 1902 and 1904 respectively. Susannah was admitted to the Nottingham Asylum on 14 January 1905 and remained in the Asylum until her death at the age of 55 on 23 November 1921 (O/N/D Bingham). Samuel (46), a cowman, was still living in Cropwell Butler in 1911. His eldest daughter Miriam (24) had returned home as housekeeper for her father and four youngest siblings, Mary (13) a scholar and day girl domestic, John (11), Robert (8) and Arthur (6). Samuel Henry (18) was living in Ragdale, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, and working as a waggoner on the farm of Robert James Foster. Frederick (14) was a farm servant in Cropwell Butler and living with Samuel Blatherwick, a waggoner on a farm, and his wife Mary Ann. Of the ten siblings, only George William, Joseph and May have not yet been traced on the 1911 Census; it is possible that George had already joined the Army. According to the notice of George's death in the local paper in 1917 his father Samuel was then living in Bingham. He may have died in 1928 (J/A/S Mansfield) age 63. Of George William's siblings: Miriam married John C Lacey (b. 25 April 1887, A/M/J Bingham) in 1914 (J/A/S Bingham). John Lacey was probably John Cowdell (24), a farm labourer, recorded living on Needham Street, Bingham, in 1911 with his parents John and Ann Cowdell and numerous siblings. In 1939 Miriam and John, a GPO wireman, were living on Chapel Yard, Newgate Street, Bingham with their two children; Grace Miriam Lacey b. 22 November 1918 (O/N/D Bingham, Marriott) a machinist (dressmaking) and Leonard Walter Cowdell Lacey b. 26 November 1920 a grocer's assistant/delivery van man. There is also a record on the 1939 Register of a Cowdell SJ Lacey b. 16 March 1915 (birth registration John SC Lacey 1915 A/M/J Bingham, Marriott), an electrical linesman, at 50 Briar Street, Nottingham. He was living with Annie Bennett, a widow, and Miriam Bennett (b. 14 February 1917) a hosiery cutter; he and Miriam were married in 1940 (J/F/M Nottingham). John married (2) Audrey Y Sisson in 1977 (John SC Lacey, O/N/D Mansfield) and his death was registered in 1991 (J/F/M Mansfield, John Samuel C Lacey b. 16 March 1915). Grace married (Crockford) and died in 1981 (O/N/D Nottingham). Leonard married Christa N Penz in 1954 (O/N/D Bingham); he died in 1996 (A/M/J Nottingham, burial/cremation index Leonard Walter Cowdell Lacey). Miriam died in 1968 (J/A/S Nottingham, b. abt 1887) age 81. Joseph (possibly Joseph Robert) attested in the Army Reserve (Special Reserve) on a Six Years Short Service engagement on 1 December 1911. He was 20 years and 2 months old and was living in Bingham, occupation farm labourer. He served in the Royal Field Artillery 20th Heavy Battery (12752) and was mobilized in August 1914, transferring to a permanent service engagement on 12 September 1914. On 2 June 1918 he transferred to the Royal Garrison Artillery (No. Cork/3801/RS). His record shows that he served in France and Salonika; as a result of the latter he made a disability pension claim (maleria) after demobilization, a claim that was dismissed. He was discharged from the army to Class Z Army Reserve on 10 April 1919; he was 28 years old. Joseph had married Florence R Footitt on 10 March 1913 (J/F/M Bingham) and they had at least two children who are named on Joseph's Army record: Joseph H Marriott b. 1913 (A/M/K Bourne Lincs, Footitt) and Lawrence W Marriott birth registered 1915 (J/F/M Basford, Footitt). There is also the registration of the birth of a Hubert E Marriott born 1921 (O/N/D Bingham, Footitt). Samuel Henry was living at Ragdale, Melton Mowbray, in 1911 and may have died in 1983 (O/N/D Melton Mowbray Leics). May has not been traced after 1901 when she was living in Cropwell Butler. Frederick has not been traced after 1911 when he was living in Cropwell Butler. Mary Winifred has not been traced after 1911 when she was living in Cropwell Butler. John Leonard died aged 16 in 1916 (J/A/S Bingham). Robert has not been traced after the 1911 Census when he was living in Cropwell Butler. Arthur has not been traced after the 1911 Census when he was living in Cropwell Butler.
