Family History

Ernest Pride was born in 1898 at Farndon, Newark and was the son of John a maltsters labourer and Alice Pride née Lambert, of Farndon Fields, Newark. His father John was born in 1864 in Hoveringham and his mother Alice Lambert was born in 1869 at Little Carlton, they were married in 1886, their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District, they went on to have 6 children, Lois b1887 Hoveringham (she died in in 1903 aged 13 yrs) , Harry b1889 Hoveringham, Mabel b1891 Hoveringham, Ernest b1898 Farndon, Alice b1903 Farndon and Elsie b1910 Farndon. In the 1911 census the family are living at Farndon Fields, Newark and are shown as John 47 yrs a maltsters labourer, he is living with his wife Alice 42 yrs and their children, Ernest 13 yrs a scholar, Alice 8 yrs a scholar and Elsie 1yr.

Military History

Lance Corporal Ernest Pride enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France on 28th June 1915. He was killed in action on 13th July 1916 and is buried at Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. grave reference 1.D.3

His elder brother Harry Pride also served in the Great War, he enlisted on 29th February 1916 at Newark, He gave his age as 27 yrs and 137 days old, he was a motor driver and was living at 1 The Avenue, Newark he was married to Clara Holmes whom he had married on 15th June 1916 at St Giles Church, Balderton, they had a son John Ernest born 15th March 1917 at Newark. Harry served with the Army Service Corps and landed in France on 1st April 1917 and then went to Salonica on 5th April 1917 where he served until 4th October 1919 and was returned to England for discharge. His discharge address was 7 Osborne Terrace, Balderton. Article published 26th July 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of John & Alice Pride of Farndon Fields, Newark. As a boy he worked for Mr. Clutterbuck, butcher of Kirkgate, for three years. He enlisted two years ago and has been at the front for about 14 months. Killed by a trench mortar. News received in letters from his officer and L/Cpl W.H. Fisher.
