Father: Charles A. Walker, born in 1870 in Nottingham and working as a Corporation road labourer and later as a Corporation horseman. Mother: Agnes Walker, born in 1871 at Nottingham and working as a lace clipper. Brothers: Charles Albert, born in 1891 and working as a lace hand, Frederick Henry, born in 1893 and working as a printer, Walter, born in 1899, Robert Ernest, born in 1906 and Frank, born in 199. Sisters: Mabel, born in 1901 and Clarice, born in 1904. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 7 Angle Yard, Nottingham, 16 Plumtree Street, Nottingham, and finally 11 Poplar Street, Nottingham.
Following training Pte. Walker was drafted to France.The Battalion was in the line at the La Bassee sector when the Germans launched their huge spring offensive Operation Michael. Their sector was not immediately involved, though there were heavy bombardments that caused some casualties, including Pte. Walker, who was killed in action. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
Nottingham Post 'In memoriam' notice, 5 September 1919: 'Walker. Missing 21 March 1917, Private W Walker of 2/5th Sherwood Foresters, late of 11 Poplar Street. Mother, father, brothers, sisters.'
