John Gamble Waller was born in 1888 at Longsight, Manchester and was the son of Herbert Gamble an elementary school teacher and Marion Waller née Barlow of Brinkley Southwell and later The Gables, Morton, Rolleston. His father Herbert Gamble was born in 1858 at Norwich, his mother Marian Barlow was born in 1858 also in Norwich, they were married in 1878 at Norwich and went on to have the following children, Flora Emma b1881 Norwich, Eva Mildred b1882 Norwich, Edgar James b1883 Norwich, Lilley Beatrice b1886 Norwich, John Gamble b1888 Manchester, Arthur Frederick b1892 Walkden, Lancs, and Sidney Horace b1894 Walkden. In the 1911 census the family are living at Brinkley, Southwell and are shown as Henry Gamble Waller 53 yrs an elementary school teacher, he is living with his wife Marian 53 yrs and their children, Flora Emma 30 yrs an elementary school teacher, John Gamble 23 yrs an elementary school teacher Lilley Beatrice 25 yrs an elementary school teacher Arthur Frederick 19 yrs an assistant teacher and Sidney Horace 17 yrs a student teacher. His probate was proved (with will) on 24th January 1918 in London and shows him as John Gamble Waller of Lomond Villa, West Street, Haslemere, Surrey, Sergeant 1/5th battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment, died 11th September 1916 in Mesopotamia, his effects of £272 3 shillings and 6 pence were left to Flora Emma Waller spinster.
Sergeant John Gamble Waller enlisted at Bramley, Surrey, whilst residing at Southwell. He served with the 5th battalion The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment. He served with his regiment in India before going to Mesopotamia, he was killed in action on 11th September 1916 during an attack on an Arab village. He is commemorated at Basra War Cemetery, Iraq. 6.U.2
Article published 15th November 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mr H.G. Waller of Fiskerton-cum-Morton and was for several years assistant at the National School, Southwell. Later assistant at Haslemere Schools, Surrey and on the point of entering a London College to complete his training when war broke out. Volunteered at once, sent to India, then Mesopotamia. Killed by a bullet during an attack on an Arab village
