He was the son of George and Mary Shelton Moss and the brother of Andrew and Stephen Moss. In 1911 they lived at 1 Williams Terrace Nottingham and later at Hucknall Torkard Notinghamshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Wiliams Yard, Beaumont Street, Nottingham and are shown as Mary Moss 54 yrs a widow and housekeeper she is living with her children, Andrew 24 yrs a butchers assistant, Stephen 20 yrs a butchers assistant and Eli 17 yrs a butchers tripe dresser. Eli married Harriett Maud Ellis (born 4th June 1894 ) in 1913 at Nottingham, they lived at 51 Sneinton Road, Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Arthur Thomas born 13th February 1914 and Beatrice Maud born 20th October 1916 (she died on 15th January 1918) Following his death his widow Harriett was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 19th March 1917.
Sapper Eli Moss enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 96th Company Royal Engineers. He died of wounds on 5th September 1916 and is buried at Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension
