William Scott was an only child, born in Worksop in 1902. His parents were William and Sarah Elizabeth Scott and were residents of Norfolk Street, Worksop. In 1905, William senior died at the age of 36. Three years later, Sarah Elizabeth married to Walter Rhodes, a widower with a son, John Cecil Rhodes, 2 years older that William. Walter Rhodes was a railway goods guard and in 1911 was living at 123 Baulk Lane. The family later moved to 23 Potter Street.
William Scott enlisted at Nottingham on the 30 July 1919, age 19, in the Sherwood Foresters. The war was at a cease fire, awaiting further negotiations. He was charged on the 20 March 1920 with, 1) being in possession of a firearm, 2) firing a revolver when on a tramcar to the danger of the public, 3) Absent from tattoo roll call. For this he was given 14 days detention and released to his duties on the 16 March. On the 3 April 1920 he was admitted to No 2 CCS hospital and discharged on the 9 June 1920, to continue treatment, and considered fit to join unit. A month later whilst having his treatment, he died. His death report read:- 127159 Pte William Scott, 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters:- age 19, religion C. E. Convulsions & Coma following an injection of Neo Kharsivan - time of death 10 10am 2/7/20".
He is buried in Worksop (Retford Road ) Cemetery. Research by Colin Dannatt
