William Henson was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the eldest son of Edward a carpet salesman and Blanche Henson née Cloughton of 54, Austen Avenue, Nottingham. His father Edward was born in 1866 and his mother Blanche Cloughton was born in 1865, both were born in Hull, Yorkshire. They were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Sculcoates Registration District, Yorkshire, they went on to have 3 sons William b1894, Fran b1896 and Arthur b1898 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 91 Burford Road, Nottingham and are shown as Edward 45 yrs a carpet salesman, he is living with his wife Blanche 46 yrs and their children, William 17 yrs a law clerk, Frank 15 yrs an apprentice carpet salesman and Arthur 13 yrs a scholar. Eldest son of Edward and Blanche Henson, of 54, Austen Avenue, Nottingham.
Private William Henson enlisted on 29th September 1914 in Grantham, he gave his age as 21 yrs and 80 days and his occupation as a clerk, he was posted to the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in France on 9th January 1916 and he was wounded in action, a gunshot wound to his buttock on 21st March 1918, he was on 31st March 1918 returned to England for treatment. When fit again he went back to France on 18th August 1918. He was killed in action on 8th October 1918 and is buried in Honnechy British Cemetery (grave ref 1.A.3)
His brother, Frank, Private 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters was killed in action 3rd August 1915. Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 28 October 1918: 'HENSON, killed in action October 4th(?) 1918, Private William Henson, Lincolnshire Regiment, age 25, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Henson, 54 Austen Avenue, Nottingham.'
