Family History

Charles Henry Bagley was born in 1894 at Besthorpe and was the son of George Bagley a farm labourer and Sarah Bagley of Low Street, Collingham. His father George was born in 1848 at Norwell and his mother Sarah was born in 1858 at Clifton, Nottingham, they were married C1892 and went on to have 9 children 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were James b1884 Cromwell, Thomas Albert b1890 Cromwell and Charles Henry b1894 Besthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Collingham village and are shown as George Bagley 63 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 53 yrs and their children, James 27 yrs a grocers shop porter and Charles 17 yrs a gardener. Charles Henry married Ethel May Turtle in 1917, their marriage was recorded in the Gainsborough registration district, they lived at 35, Tennyson St., Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

Military History

Private Charles Henry Bagley enlisted at Dublin whilst living at North Collingham, he initially served with the service number 39404 in the North Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action whist serving with the 20th Manchester Regiment on 23rd October 1918 , he is buried at Pommereuil British Cemetery, Nord, France. B.9

He is also commemorated on Gainsborough WW1 Roll of Honour/remembrance book kept at,All Saints Church and the Library at Gainsborough.
