John Shillito and Emily Mallender married in 1888 in Worksop. They had 3 children born in Worksop at 181 Eastgate, Edith born 1890, Harriet born 1892 and Wilfred Henry born 1897. Their father, John, died at the young age of 33 in 1897. By 1901, Emily was still living with her three children at 181 Eastgate where she was a laundress.
Pte. Wilfred Henry Shillito Worksop Guardian 4 June 1915 Unofficial information has been received in Worksop of the death in action of Pte. Wilfred Henry Shillito, of the 1st Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, son of the late Mr John Shillito and Mrs Shillito of 181 Eastgate, Worksop. The intimation conveyed in a letter to Pte Shillito’s sister, from Lance-Corpl. Tollerton, of 60 Norfolk Street, Worksop, who says Shillito was killed on Sunday May 9th. The writer adds, “He was very much liked and respected by all.” Shillito was employed at the Steetley Pit before enlisting in Kitchener’s Army, and formerly worked in the telegraph department at the post office. Pte Wilfred Henry Shillito Worksop Guardian 11June 1915 Last week we published the unofficial information that Pte Wilfred Henry Shillito, son of Mrs and the late Mr John Shillito of 181 of Eastgate, Worksop, had been killed in action. Unfortunately, the information has been confirmed by the War Office. He was attached to the Sherwood Foresters and was only 18 years of age. Great sympathy will be extended to Mrs Shillito and family in their bereavement.
