He was the son of Edwin John and Jane Archer Brierley of 23, Highbury Avenue Bulwell, Nottingham and the brother of Wallace Edwin (1881-1963), Gertrude, Frank Archer, Fred and Dorothy Agnes Brierley. Fred who also served during the 'Great War ' was also killed in action 21/03/1918 . (Jane Archer is buried with her eldest son, Wallace Edwin, in Redhill Cemetery, Arnold, Nottingham.)
Private George Cyril Brierley was a credit draper’s traveller prior to enlisting on 11th December 1915 at Nottingham. He served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 14th July 1916 and was killed in action, 20th September 1917, aged 21, in the attack on Bulgar Wood, near Ypres, Belgium. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Belgium
