Ernest Hayes was born in 1892 he was baptised on 27th March 1892 at Christ Church, Radford, he was the son of Harry Elijah a cabinet maker and Annie Hayes née Blundy of 13 Shipstone Street, Nottingham. Henry Elijah was born in 1863 AT Radford, Annie Blundy was born in 1862 at Lenton, they were married on 2nd August 1884 at Christ Church, Radford, they had 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. On 1901 Census he is living with his parents and siblings – Harry Samuel, William Thomas, Arthur, Florence and Herbert - at 15 Osborne Street, Radford. His father is a cabinet maker. On 1911 Census he is living with his parents and siblings – Harry Samuel, William Thomas, Florence, Herbert, Leonard, Albert and Frederick - at 13 Shipstone Street,New Basford, Nottingham. His father is a joiner. Ernest is an engineer & fitter
Lance Corporal Ernest Hayes enlisted at Nottingham , he died of wounds on 3rd March 1915 at Boulogne Hospital, he is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, grave reference 3.C.76
His brother, 393 Wheeler Staff Sergeant Harry Samuel Hayes originally served with No. 4 Company, North Midland Divisional Train (454th Company) Army Service Corps. He died on 3rd February 1919 whilst serving with 1022 (H.T) Company, ASC at Aberdeen. His body was brought back to Nottingham and he is buried in the General CemeteryIn memoriam published 15th March 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- HAYES. – Died of wounds in Boulogne Hospital, March 3rd, Lance-Corporal E. Hayes, Royal Fusiliers, the dearly-beloved son of Harry and Annie Hayes, 13, Shipstone-street, Basford, also brother of Staff-Sergeant and Florrie Hayes, aged 23 years.
