Family History

Wilfred Dennis was born in 1882 at Nottingham and was the son of Charles a stationary engine driver and Sarah Dennis of 9 Daybrook Street, Sherwood. His father Charles was born in 1843 at Awsworth his mother Sarah was born in 1842 at Bulwell, they were married C1860 and went on to have the following children, Elizabeth b1868, Mary b1872, Linda b1873 Thomas b1873, Agnes b1880, Wilfred b1882, and Charles James b1885, all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 9 Daybrook Street, Sherwood and are shown as Charles 68 yrs not working but a former stationary engine driver, he is living with his wife Sarah 69 yrs and their children Wilfred 29 yrs a traveller for a provisions merchant and Charles James 26 yrs a lace machine engineer. Wilfred married his wife Poppie Georgina Pinder (born 7th August 1885) on 2nd December 1911 at Carrington, they were residing at 103 Percival Street, Sherwood. At the time of his death his widow was living at 8 Osborne Grove, Daybrook Street, Sherwood , she was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week commencing 6th May 1918. She later lived at Lidgett House, Edwinstow, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Gunner Wilfred Dennis attested on 11th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 34 yrs and 1 month, his address as 103 Percival Street, Sherwood and his occupation as that of a traveller. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 19th May 1916 and reported to the Royal Garrison Artillery depot at Yarmouth. He landed in France on 22nd December 1916 and was killed in action on 16th October 1917 and was buried at Maroc British Cemetery grave reference 2.M.16
