Family History

George Frederick Turner was born in 1883 he was the son of Joseph Wilkes (b1846 West Bromwich) a joiner and Lavinia Turner (b1851 Cheltenham) of 41 Padley Hill, Mansfield. George married Annie Haywood (born 8th April 1886) on 04th June 1906 at St Johns Church, Mansfield, they had 2 children Gertrude Ellen born 4th April 1907 and Laura May born 04th December they lived at 23 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse where they were living in 1911 . Annie was awarded a pension of 22shillings & 11d for herself and the 2 children. He had over £4 with the CO-OP Society savings.

Military History

Private George Frederick Turner enlisted on 1st May 1915 at Mansfield, he was aged 32 years and 233 days, he was a warehouseman, initially posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment he embarked on 9th June 1916 landing at Basra in Mesopotamia on 16th September 1916, he joined his unit 8th battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers on 1st October 1916 at Amara. He died of gunshot wound to the head and is buried at Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
