Born c1895 in Nottingham. Son of Mr. George and Constance Emma Elliott (nee Wells), His father was a railway engine stoker and in 1901 the family were living at 42 Bourne St., Netherfield, Notts. By 1911 his father was now a railway engine driver and they were living at No 37 Victoria Road, Netherfield. By 20 February 1919 his parents had moved to No 7 Bourne Street, Netherfield. Rex now had a younger brother Albert George, and sister Constance Annie.
Rex initially enlisted as Private 10765 in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 27 August 1914 at Harrogate. He was appointed Lance Corporal 8 May 1914 but lost his stripe and was demoted to Private in October 1915 as well as forfeiting 17 days pay. On 27 October 1915 Rex left for Alexandria as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force where he stayed to 1 July 1916 and was then sent to France 2 July 1916. During September whilst in France he was wounded in action by a gunshot to his right arm and was sent home on 1st October 1916 to Chipstead Hospital in Sevenoaks. He was then transferred to the Durham Light Infantry as 58476 for a short while on 25 Feb 1917 before being transferred to the Labour Corps 28 April 1917 as Private 165925. He was attached to the 497th Home Service Company, Labour Corps. He died of influenza at the Northumberland War Hospital in Gosport and is buried at Carlton Cemetery. he was eligible for the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals. His personal effects were sent to his mother and included letters, photos, a tobacco pouch and pipes and spectacles.
