Family History

Cecil Alfred Woodward was born in 1897 at Carlton and was the son of Tom Woodward a dairyman and Sarah Woodward née Huckerby of 49 Gedling Rd., Carlton, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1867 at Carlton and his mother Sarah Huckerby was born in 1866 also at Carlton, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to the have 8 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Mary b1899 Carlton, Thomas b1891 Carlton, William Arthur b1892 Carlton, Lizzy Huckerby b 1895 Carlton, Cecil Alfred b1897 Carlton, Harold b1905 Daybrook and Florence Ivy b1908 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 49 Gedling Road, Carlton and are shown as Tom 44 yrs a milk carrier dairyman, he is living with his wife Sarah 45 yrs and their children, Mary 22 yrs a restaurant waitress, Thomas 20 yrs an upholsterer, William Arthur 19 yrs a newsagents assistant, Lizzie Huckerby 16 yrs a machinist, Cecil Alfred 14 yrs a pawn brokers assistant, Harold 6 yrs and Florence Ivy 3 yrs.

Military History

Private Cecil Alfred Woodward enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Carlton, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
