Arthur Woodward was born in 1891 in Carlton and was the son of George a carter at the local brickworks and Mary Woodward née Fox. and lived at Brickyard Cottages Burgass Road Thorneywood Nottingham. His father George was born in 1844 in Carlton and his mother Mary Fox was born in 1864 in Worksop, they were married in 1885 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Carlton, Arthur b1891, Ada 1895, Grace b1899, May b1902 and George b1905. In the 1911 census they are living at the Thorneyhill Brickyard, Standhill Road at Carlton and are shown as George 67 yrs a carter he is living with his wife Mary 47 yrs and their children , Arthur 20 yrs a brick maker, Ada 16 yrs a machine overlocker, Grace 12 yrs a scholar, May 9 yrs a scholar and George 6 yrs a scholar.
Private Arthur Woodward, enlisted at Birmingham and served with “B” Company, 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 25th March 1918. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Panels 52 to 54
Death notice published 13th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WOODWARD. – Killed in action March 28th, 1918, Pte. Arthur Woodward, Sherwood Foresters, dearly beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Woodward, Brickyard-cottages, Thorneywood.
