Arthur Whall was born in Worksop in 1891 at 37 Langley Street, Worksop. He was the 4th child of William and Annie Whall. He, and his 6 siblings were bought up in Worksop, and, when he was 10 years old, was living on Pelham Street. In 1911, his father died aged 49 and at this time Arthur was working as a colliery labourer underground, with his widowed mother at 7 Clinton Street.
Pte Arthur Whall Worksop Guardian 29 September 1916 Amongst the Worksop Soldiers the news of whose death has been received this week is Pte. Arthur Whall, of the Grenadier Guards, and son of Mrs. Whall, of Clinton Street, Worksop. Pte Whall was an exceedingly fine young fellow; he stood 6ft 6inches, and was well built in proportion. He was a typical Guardsman, as, in the field, he proved to be a typical soldier. He joined the Army on May 25th 1915, and since June 3rd he had been in France. He took part in the Historic charge of the Guards, and in the subsequent fighting, and was wounded on Sept: 19th, and has since died of his wounds. He was single, 25 years of age, and lived with his mother and sisters.
