Mildred Mallender had been born in Worksop in 1868 and lived at Lady Lee with her family for most of her life. Her mother died in 1884 aged 37. When Mildred was 22, she had a child, William Stilwell Malender in 1890 and another named Fred Mallender in 1896. By 1901, the Mallender household at Lady Lee comprised of Mildred and her brother, her widower father who was head of the house and Mildred’s 2 children, William Stilwell and Fred Mallender In 1902, Mildred married Tom Taylor of Low Town Street, Worksop. The couple had 3 children before 1911, Emma, Elsie and John. After the war being declared, Mildred’s son, William and her husband, Tom, both joined the colours, son William being killed in 1916 and her husband Tom, a year later in May 1917.
Worksop Guardian 25 May 1917 “Private Tom Taylor, Woodend, is reported to have died on active service. Mrs Taylor received the information through Pte Hammond, Worksop, but no official notification has as yet been received. Little hope, however, is entertained by Mrs Taylor that her husband is alive and should her fears be realised her loss will be doubly severe as her eldest son, W Mallender, was early among those on the lengthening list who have given their lives for the vindication of the nation’s honour”. Worksop Guardian 8 June 1917 “Confirmation has been received in a letter from the Chaplain of the death of Pte. Tom Taylor, of Shireoaks, whose photograph we reproduced. The memories of both Pte. Taylor and Pte. J.H. Brownlowe were commemorated at Holy Communion at St, Lukes Church , on Whit-Sunday morning, the service closing with an appropriate requiem hymn, the National Anthem, and the Last Post, the latter being blown from St, Cuthbert’s College”.
