Worksop born couple, George Roberts and Sarah Elizabeth Clarke, married in Worksop in 1874. George worked in the timber business and lived in Kilton Road in the early days of their marriage. They had 3 boys and 3 girls all born to them in Worksop, namely, George Henry born 1879, Mary E born 1881, William S born 1888, Emma born 1889, Frederick born 1892 and Beatrice May born 1895. In 1901 they were residing at 49 Portland Street, Worksop and by 1911 were at number 1 Manvers Street. When at working age, all 3 boys were employed doing various jobs in the local collieries and when the call came to join the colours, all 3 volunteered. George Henry and William both were killed and Fred was discharged no doubt through disability caused by the war.
Private G H Roberts Worksop Guardian 4 October 1918 We have also recorded the death in action of Pte George Henry Roberts, Lincolns, son of Mrs Roberts, 1 Manvers Street, who was killed in action, on or about Sept. 18th. The deceased soldier was 42 years of age and single, and his death is a great blow to his mother, with who he resided and who has another son missing. Pte Roberts joined up 18 months ago and had been in France about a year. He formerly worked at Manton, and was much respected by all who knew him. The news of his death was contained in a letter from the Rev. A Davis, C F, who writes:- “Dear Mrs Roberts, I am writing to extend to you my deepest sympathy with the sad grief that is now your by the death of your son, Pte G H Roberts. I found his body and buried him yesterday morning. He was evidently killed instantaneously, just at the place the battalion had to reach. We leave them in God’s hands knowing they are safe, and in sure and certain hope of the resurrection of eternal life moving on towards the greatest of all days.” Mrs Roberts missing son is Sergeant William Solomon Roberts, Sherwood Foresters, who had not been heard of since May 25th. Much sympathy is expressed with her in her suspense and in this further trouble which she is called upon to endure. A third son, Pte Fred Roberts, Coldstream Guards, has just been discharged after four years service.
