Martin Francis Rowland was born in Tipperary, Ireland and worked as a railway signalman. He married Emma Wigglesworth from Worksop in 1879. They had five children who were all born in Worksop, Albert Francis 1880, Margaret 1882, Ernest 1887 died. 1891, Hector Franklin 1894 and Dorothy born 1901. The family had resided in Grafton Street and Sandy lane before moving to 23 James Street. The youngest son, Hector enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment on the 31st August 1914 and went to France on the 29th July 1915, never to return.
Drummer Hector Rowland Worksop Guardian 13 October 1916 Official news has been received this week by Mr M Rowland, Myrtle Cottage, James Street, Worksop, that his son, Drummer Hector Rowland of the 7th Leicesters, was killed in action on September 7th at a place not stated. This news confirms the grave fears which had been entertained concerning Drummer Rowlands safety. He was a gallant young man and an only son and we are very sure that our readers sincerely sympathise with the parents and sisters who cherish his memory.
