Born Edwin Joseph Peck in 1895 in Worksop, was the son of Edward/Edwin Peck. His father had previously been married to Selina Brown and had five children with her, Henry in 1882, George in 1884. Ethel 1888, Christopher in 1891 and Edwin in 1895. All the births were in Worksop being bought up in 13 Boundary Row, Potter Street, Worksop. Selina died in Worksop in 1895 age just 32, in the same quarter as Edwin had been born. In the 1901 census, Edwin senior had re-married, his wife’s name being Eliza and lived at 5 Newgate Street. 10 years on found the family at 60 Park Street and Edwin Junior was now employed as a newspaper errand boy at the age 15.
Although born and resident in Worksop, Edwin enlisted at Sheffield. It can be speculated that he was probably a trained soldier or Territorial as he went to France with the first British Expeditionary Force on the 13th August 1914 and was killed in action less than two months later. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium
