John Edward Marks married Jane Storey of Worksop in 1883. In their early married life they lived at 7 Dock Road, Worksop where John was working as a miner. The couple had 5 children, William1884, Leonard 2nd Sept 1885, Rob-ert 1896 and Kate and Fred 1897. Just after the birth of his last child, their father John, died in Dec 1897 age 39. In 1901 the remaining family were living at 70 Sandy Lane being supported by the two elder boys, William and Leonard who were working in the local colliery. In 1909, Leonard married Hannah Lancashire in Worksop and resided at 185 Sandy Lane and a year later had a son named Joseph Leonard. In 1913 they had another son, John Marks who would have been a year old when Leonard was called up and enlisted in the Royal Marines on the 3rd September 1914.

Leonard Marks Worksop Guardian 28 May 1915 The death is announced from wounds received in the Dardanelles action of Pte Leonard Marks, Royal Marines of 185 Sandy Lane, Worksop, the death taking place in the hospital at Alexandria on May 13th. Deceased who was 30 years of age, was the son of the late Mr John Marks. He enlisted in the old Notts and Derbys and served his seven years. When war broke out, he was recalled to the colours as a Reservist and attached to the Royal Marines. No details are to hand with regard to the action in which he was wounded or his ship. Marks and Edeson were brothers in law.
Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. His brother,William was also killed in the Somme in 1916. Research by Colin Dannatt
