Lawrence Alfred Hollis was born in 1894 in Newark He married his wife Penelope Hage on 7th March 1916 at Newark, she brought a child to the marriage, Lilian May Hage born 11th November 1913, they went on to have two further children, Leslie born 30th August 1916 and Laura born 3rd October 1917, they lived at 38 Parliament Street, Newark. Following his death his widow Penelope was awarded pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week for herself and her two children.
Private Lawrence Alfred Hollis attested on 6th September 1916 at Nottingham, he was 22 yrs and 119 days old, he lived at 38 Parliament Street, Newark and was a gas stoker, his next of kin was his wife Penelope of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised on 23rd March 1917 at Newark. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters and went to France in July 1917. He was admitted to the 4th casualty clearing station on 27th September 1917 suffering from gun shot wound to the back and abdomen, he died from his wounds the same day. He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.
Article published on 17th October 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Resided with wife and three children at 38 Parliament Street. Only 23 years of age, he joined the Sherwood's on March 31st, 1917 and sent to France in July. Prior to enlistment he was a stoker at the gas works. Died at a base hospital of chest and abdomen wounds, passed away peacefully at midnight on September 27th.
