Thomas and Emily Bartle married in 1865 in the East Markham area of Nottinghamshire. The couple lived at Sibthorpe Place at Markham Moor over the next 7 or 8 years where they had 4 children. It was around 1873/4 when the family moved to Worksop, taking up residency at 9 Norfolk Street. During the next 10 years they increased the family with 5 more children, the last one being Ernest Baker who was born in 1883. 2 years later, Thomas, their father died at the age of 48. Emily took to being a charwoman, no doubt to make ends meet and the older girls were now dressmaking. Ten years later the family had moved within the same Street, to number 59. There now remained only 4 children left at home but all working including 18 year old Ernest, who was working as a boot dealers assistant. He got married in 1908 and had a daughter, Minnie the following year.
Pte Ernest Baker Worksop Guardian 6 October 1916 Official news was received on Friday, accompanied by a letter of sympathy from the King, of the death, killed in action of Pte Ernest Baker, of the 1st Cheshire Regiment, whose home is at 75, Norfolk-street, Worksop. No details are to hand yet as to the nature of his death, except that it took place on September 4th. Pte Baker was the son of Mrs Baker of Norfolk Street, and his father had been dead many years. When he left school he went into the employ of the late Mr. F.T. Clarke, boot maker, Bridge St: and remained with him until his death, when he moved to another branch of the same firm at Retford. Here death again brought about the termination of the business, and Pte Baker returned to Worksop, and was for a time with Mr, E W Ashwell, boot maker. Pte Baker who was 32 years of age, enlisted in the Notts. And Derbys in the first months of the war, but had since been transferred to the 1st Cheshire Regt: and had been in France about twelve months. He leaves a widow, at present resident in Nottingham, and one child, a daughter, who resides with her Grandmother in Norfolk St. Pte Barker was very well known in Worksop and the news of his death will be received with much regret by many of his old pals.
