Family History

Arthur Gregory Simpson was born in 1894, he was baptised on 19th October 1910 at St Mary's Church, Eastwood he was the son of John Gregory Simpson a coal miner and Annie Simpson née Shaw of 5 Nottingham Road Eastwood Nottinghamshire. John Gregory was born in 1858 at Greasley, Annie Shaw was born in 1861 at Eastwood, they were married on 8th April 1882 at St Mary's Church, Eastwood, they went on to have 10 children. In 1911 the family were living at Lynncroft, Eastwood, John Gregory is 53 yrs and a coal miner he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs and 7 of their children, including John Gregory 22 yrs a coal miner.

Military History

Gunner Arthur Gregory Simpson enlisted in Eastwood and served with 6th Battery 40th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He died from the effects of gas on 24th May 1918 at the 56th general hospital at Etaples. and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.

Extra Information

Two brothers also served one being taken prisoner by the Germans and another surviving an air raid whilst in hospital with Trench Feet.
