Henry Simpson, born Worksop, was married to Catherine Wray at Farnham in 1872. This was probably whilst in the armed forces, as 7 of his 8 children were born at military locations. Catherine M was born in 1873 at Aldershot, Thomas Henry Simpson was born in 1875 unknown location, Eleanor born 1878 Portsmouth , Ada born 1879 at Al-dershot, Gertrude was born in 1881 Dublin Ireland, Lilian born 1882 in Aldershot, Mary Ann born 1885 Aldershot and Ethel W was born in 1892 in Worksop, Notts. Henry’s army career had ended by 1891, as he was living at 54 Cheapside, Worksop working as a book keeper and clerk. 10 years later his family had settled in Potter Street, him being the inspector of nuisances, for Worksop. His only son, Thomas Henry, appears to have avoided all the census, probably due to boarding school, his father’s movements whilst in the army and his own (suspected) military career. Thomas was however, in Worksop in late 1901, as he is recorded as marrying Minnie Mellor at that location in that year. Also, a grandson called Harry Forrest Simpson was living with Henry and Catherine who had been born at Campsall, Yorks in 1903.
Although Thomas Henry Simpson appears only on the CWGC records, his grave in Worksop is marked with a family headstone and not with a CWG headstone. Captain T H Simpson, Worksop Worksop Guardian 15 Aug 1919We have this week to record the death at the early age of 44 years of Captain Thomas Henry Simpson, RASC, of Bath Terrace, Worksop, only son of Mr Henry Simpson, inspector of nuisances to the Worksop Urban Council. The son of an old soldier, the late Capt Simpson, joined the army as a lad and by his ability, devotion to duty and soldierly qualities, he rose in the ranks and gained his captaincy early in the present war. He had an adventurous career and in his early days he was one of the few white men who accompanied Sir H H Johnson on his exploration trip to Equitorial Africa. Capt Simpson served with distinction in the present war, and as an officer in charge of transport, he had many escapes. He was badly shell shocked from the effects which he never recovered. He died on Sunday and his internment will take place with full military honours at Worksop New Cemetery tomorrow (Saturday). The firing and funeral party, 100 strong, will be provided by the G.O.C. Clipstone Camp and the Worksop Federation of Discharged Soldiers will be present in force. Capt Simpson married a daughter of the late Mr H Tomkins and Mrs Tompkins, Worksop, and much sympathy is expressed with the widow and her family, a boy already in the army and three daughters in their bereavement and also with his father and other relatives.
