John Wiliam Wilson was born in 1887 at Mansfiedl he was the son of Alderman & Mayor John Lievesley Wilson a master plasterer and Mary Wilson née Barningham of 5 West Hill Drive, Mansfield.John Leiversley Wilson was born in 1867 at Sheffield, Mary Barningham was born in 1866 at Mansfield they were married in 1886 at Mansfield, they went on to have 7 children.In 1911 the family were living at 5 Westhill Drive Mansfield, John Leiversley 44 yrs a master plasterer is living with is wife Mary 45 yrs and their 7 children. Probate was proven on 29th October 1919 at Nottingham, it shows him as John William Wilson of 5 Westhill Drive, Mansfield , Second Lieutenant in H.M.Army died on 21st March 1918 in France, his effects of £105 and 5 shillings were left to Jon Liversley Wilson a plasterer.
John William Wilson was a Private when he enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he had the service number 2169 and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was a Corporal when was awarded a military medal which was gazetted in the London Gazette 11.11.1916: Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 7th (Robin Hood) Battalion 31.10.1917 and was Killed in Action at Bullecourt, 21.3.1918.the first day of the German offensive.He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France (Bay 7).
John's brothers, Strawson Lievesley and Harold, married sisters, Edith Annie and Alice Louisa Richardson, both of whom were teachers at Mansfield schools in 1911. Strawson married Edith in 1915, and Harold married Alice on 15 October 1917; John was best man at their wedding. Edith and Alice had four brothers, two of whom died in the war: Frederick James Richardson served in the Royal Engineers (108889 Sapper) and died at Chatham of meningitis in April 1916 and Percy Edward Richardson served with the 1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (2429 Private) and was killed at Kemmel in April 1915. Percy worked in Sutton-in-Ashfield before the war and is commemorated on the town's memorials. Lieu S L Wilson, killed, Lieu J W Wilson, missing, Harold a POW, Frank in France and Stanley in training.: 19/12/1918: 2nd Lieu John William Wilson missing since 21/03/1918 has now been confirmed killed on that date.: 26/12/1918: Lieu Wilson's batman has returned home and had given details of Lieu Wilson's death. " he carried on with the machine-gun after all the other officers had been killed and held off the Germans for 20 mins with only 2 men. The batman was sent back to take a message to the rear. When he returned Lieu Wilson was dead next to the gun and he was taken prisoner."
