James Henry Sanderson married in 1892, registered in Mansfield, to Hannah Hill. Over the next seven years they had four children who were all born in South Normanton, Derbyshire. The children were, Samuel born 1894, Salathiel Orene Born 1895, Alice born 1897 and Edna born1899. By 1901, they were living at Blackwell Road, Hucknall under Huthwaite, Notts where James was working as a coal miner. They were back in Normanton in 1911 residing at 12 Peel Street, and both of the boys, now age 17 and 16, were employed as pit pony drivers. Over the next few years, the family had moved to be living at Newcastle Ave in Worksop and it was from here that Salathiel enlisted in the Notts and Derby regiment.
Pte Salathiel Sanderson Worksop Guardian 28 March1919 It is rather late in the day to talk of soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice but news has just been received in Worksop that Pte Salathiel Sanderson, Notts and Derbys (Sherwood Foresters), son of Mr and Mrs J H Sanderson, 71 Newcastle Avenue, Worksop, was killed in action or died of wounds, on or about October 21st 1918. Pte Sanderson who was familiarly known as “Joe” enlisted in May 1915, and after being in training in Watford and Luton, took part in the Irish rebellion. Later he saw service in France, but was wounded and invalided home in April 1917. He returned to France but was reported wounded and missing on October 21st 1918. Since then he has been reported killed in action or died of wounds, and now official information has been received that he was killed. Pte Sanderson, who was only 23 years of age at the time of his death, formerly worked at the Manton Colliery and was well known in Worksop. He was a splendid soldier, and all the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to Mr and Mrs Sanderson in their bereavement. Their son died when the whole British front was advancing on the Germans, and it is particularly sad that he should meet his death when the end of the fighting was in sight.
