Robert and Mary Ann Hewitt had 7 children all born in Worksop. Their births ranged between 1888 to 1901 all born in Worksop. They were:- Ernest, Charlotte, Eliza, Beatrice, Leonard, Florence, Mary. Robert, their father, made his living as a carter of straw and hay and the family lived at 66 Marecroft in 1901 and ten years later had moved to 51 Creswell Street and Leonard remained living with his parents where he was working as a bottle washer for a brewery. He was attested at Worksop on the 11th Dec 1915 when he was 19 years old. He was put on the reserve until 11th May 1918 when he was mobilised.
Pte Leonard Hewitt Worksop Guardian 29 November 1918 News has been received by Mr and Mrs R Hewitt, 51 Creswell Street, Worksop, that their son, Pte Leonard Hewitt, Notts and Derbys, was killed in action on October 20th. The gallant lad was one of the large band of young men in the last comb out at Manton, so many of whom have died bravely fighting against the Hun. Pte Hewitt enlisted on May 13th and went to France on Sept 6th so that the last six weeks of his life was full of danger and excitement. He has believed to have been shot by a sniper. He was 22 years of age and a smart , well conducted lad. Much sympathy is expressed with his parents and other relatives. We hope to reproduce his photograph next week. His elder brother, Corporal Ernest Hewitt, Sherwood Foresters, is in hospital suffering from wounds in the thigh.
