Edgar William Calvert

Edgar Calvert was attested and passed medical fit at Worksop, on the 24th Aug 1914. He was registered of age 34, a bricklayer and residing at Mill Lane Blyth Rotherham. He had previously served 2 years 4th Notts and Derby (time ex-pired). He joined the 6th Lincoln Regiment and was made up to Lance Corporal on 24th Dec 1914, but, for reasons unknown, requested to revert back to Private on the 31st March 1915. He had spent 306 days as a home posting, before being drafted with the BEF Mediterranean on the 1st July 1915. On the 14th of Aug 1915, he was reported missing given an official date of death from the War Office as died on or since 9th Aug 1915 in the Dardanelles, He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. His widow, Alice Beatrice Calvert was residing at 26 Westgate, Worksop, when she received a pension of 12/6d per week commencing 10th October 1916. Pte E.W.Calvert Worksop Guardian 2 June 1916 News has been received this week by Mrs Alice B Calvert, 8 Forests Cottages Bridge St Worksop, that her husband Pte Edgar William Calvert, 8th Lincolns, reported missing on August 9th is now reported dead. The War Office, in com-municating the news forwards to Mrs Calvert, the King and Queen’s message of sympathy, Pte Calvert was the son of the late Mr Christopher Calvert, Brook Terrace, Newcastle Avenue and was a bricklayer by trade. He was employed in his capacity on the new colliery at Harworth when the War broke out and had served in the Army fourteen months before the news that he was missing was received.
