Frederick Norton was born in 1892 at Bassingham and was the son of Robert and his 3rd wife Ellen Norton of Village Street, Bassingham. His father Robert was born in 1833 at Bassingham and died in 1908 still at the same village. His fathers first wife Fanny Wray whom he married in 1855 died in 1870, they had 5 children, his second wife Mary Wilkinson he married in 1870, she died in 1882 they had 5 children, he married his third wife Ellen Clayton in 1884, (she brought 2 children to the marriage) they went on to have a further 6 children, she died in 1909. In the 1901 census the family lived on Village Street at Bassingham. In the 1911 census Frederick Norton has left the family home and is a servant living at Dunham on Trent, he is shown as being 19 yrs of age a farm servant, he is living with Joseph Barlow 54 yrs a farm foreman and his wife Mary 55 yrs and their family including a daughter Rose Barlow 14 yrs his future wife. He married his wife Rose Barlow on 24th December 1912 at the register office at East Retford, they went on to have the following children, Kate born 7th February 1913 and Frederick born 3rd March 1916, they lived at 2 Sheppards Row, Newark. Following his death his widow Rose was awarded a pension for herself and her two children of 22shilings and 11 pence to commence from the 30th July 1917.
Private Frederick Norton attested at Newark on 10th December 1915, he gave his age as 24 yrs and 35 days, his address as 2 Sheppards Row, Newark and his occupation as that of a maltster, his next of kin was his wife Rose of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war 27th April 1916. He served with the North Staffordshire Regiment and landed in Mesopotamia on 3rd September 1916. He died of wounds at the 40th field ambulance on 13th January 1917 and is buried at Amara War Cemetery Iraq 24.C.13
Article published in the Newark Herald on 3rd February 1917 :- 'A native of Bassingham and afterwards lived at 2, Sheppards Row, Newark while employed as a maltster at Messrs. Gilstrap, Earp & Co. He enlisted on April 27th 1916 and was home on leave during July before leaving on Sept. 4th for Mesopotamia. While at North Shields in a bomb running competition, he came fifth out of 500 entrants. His wife and two little children are residing with her husband’s sister at 45 Baldertongate.' Note: Rose was probably 15 years old at the time of her marriage. In 1912 the age at marriage could be 12 for a girl and 14 for a boy, but the consent of parents was required for both up to the age of 21. The age of marriage for both was raised to 16 in 1929 although consent of parents was still required until the age of 21.
