Robert Dudley known as Dudley was born in 1885 and was the son of Henry a draper and dealer and Harriette Dobson North née Needham of 24 Watson Avenue, Mansfield Henry was born in 1859, Harriett Dobson Needham was born in 1862 both were born in Sutton in Ashfield, married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Leigh Bank, Sutton in Ashfield, Henry 52 yrs is a draper and dealer he is living with his wife Harriett 49 yrs and 3 of his their children, Dudley 26 yrs a bank clerk, Leslie 20 yrs an architect and Doris 19 yrs of age. He was the nephew and godson of Rev Needham who made a gift to Sutton in Ashfield church in memory of his nephew. Dudley left £286 6s &3d to his father in his will.
Lieutenant Robert Dudley North was commissioned Second Lieutenant 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, 22nd December 1914 and was promoted Lieutenant and joined the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at St. Jean, Belgium, 22nd February 1916. He was killed in action, 3rd May 1916, aged 31, by German shellfire in X10 trench, Canal Bank, near Poperinghe, Belgium.He is buried in La Brique Military Cemetery No. 2 (grave ref. I.V.15)
Southwell Diocesan Magazine, June 1930 (Vol 3, No 6): 'Sutton in Ashfield has received an In Memoriam gift from the Rev RR Needham of Tunbridge Wells. The material is of the richest texture and combines the most exquisite colouring and workmanship. The gift is in memory of Robert Dudley North, the son of Mr and Mrs Harry North of Mansfield, the nephew and godson of the donor. The following inscription is to be attached to the chasuble, 'In memoriam, Robert Dudley North, who loved and served this church. At rest - Flanders, May 3rd 1916.'
