Arthur Ernest Bates was born in 1897 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Arthur Bates a fitter and Sarah Jane Bates née Beard of 17 Oakland Street, Hyson Green. His father Albert was born in 1875 at Nottingham, he died in 1910 aged 34 yrs the death was recorded in the Newcastle upon Tyne registration district, his mother Sarah Jane Beard was born in 1874 in Nottingham they went on to marry in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Arthur Ernest b1897. Dorothy b1899 both born in Nottingham they had further children, Stanley Curtis b1902, Frederick b1904 and Annie Bates b1906 all were born in Newcastle upon Tyne. In the 1911 census the family lived at 5 Target Street Radford Nottingham and were shown as Sarah Jane Bates 37 yrs a widow and lace drawer, she is living with her children Arthur Ernest 13 yrs a box maker, Dorothy 12 yrs a scholar, Stanley Curtis 9 yrs a scholar, Frederick 7 yrs a scholar and Annie 5 yrs

Military History

Private Arthur Ernest Bates enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 43475 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He later transferred to the 19th battalion Machine Gun Corps and was killed in action on 18th April 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial,
