Walter Frederick Collins was born on 10th April 1891 at Manchester and was baptised on 2nd March 1892 at Gorton Parish Church and was the son of the late William Henry Collins and Louisa Emma Collins of 2 Heaton Yard, Parliament Street, Newark. His father William Henry was born in 1834 at Rochdale, Lancashire and died in 1897 at Chorlton, Lancashire aged 62 yrs, his mother Louisa Emma White was born in 1853 at Newark, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded n the Chorlton Registration District. Walter Frederick was married to his wife Lily Moran in 1913 at Newark and they lived at 11 Vernon Street Newark.
Sapper Walter Frederick Collins enlisted at Newark on 14th September 1914 and initially served with the service number 2443 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 19th August 1915. He was serving with the Inland Water Transport (Sandwich) , Royal Engineers when he died at Hill House Military Hospital, Minister Kent on 6th February 1917. He is buried at Newark-upon-Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.
Article published in the Newark Advertiser 14th February 1917 :- Resided with wife at 26 Barnbygate, Newark. Was for some years at Messrs. W.N. Nicholson & Son’s works. As a boy attended Christ Church Day School. A regular worshipper at Lombard Street Congregational Church. Enlisted on Sept. 14th, 1914 in the 1/8th Sherwood Foresters and went out to France. After being invalided home was transferred to the Royal Engineers, Inland Water Transport. Was in Newark on furlough a fortnight ago and was apparently in good health. Upon returning to his military duties was taken ill and died in hospital.
