Charles Crampton was born in 1894 at Balderton and was the son of Edwin a farm labourer and Fanny Crampton née Edlington of 11 Barmby Crossing, Newark. His father Edwin was born in 1856 at Kelham and his mother Fanny Edlington was born in 1855 in Liverpool. They were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they went on to have 9 children sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children recorded on the 1901/1911 census are John b1877 Southwell Harry b1883 North Muskham, Joseph b1888 Newark, Charles b1894 Balderton and Annie b1895 Balderton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Barnby Road, Newark and are shown as Edward 53 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Fanny 56 yrs and his children, Harry 28 yrs a general labourer at plaster pit Joseph 23 yrs a general labourer plaster pit, Charles 17 yrs a brake lad (plaster pit) and Annie 16 yrs
Private Charles Crampton enlisted at Newark in November 1914, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 25th June 1915 and was killed in action on 5th August 1915. Having no known grave huis name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Article published on 21st August 1915 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Mr & Mrs E. Crampton, Barnby Crossing, Newark. Employed by Mr. Almond, at Bowbridge, before enlisting in the 8th Sherwood Foresters, Nov. 1914. Killed a few days short of his 22nd birthday. Brother, Pte. Joseph Crampton, is with the Sherwood Foresters at Colchester.
