Family History

John Michael Marsh was born in 1882 at Darwen, Lancashire, he was the son of the late Edward a bricklayers labourer and Ann Marsh née O’Connor of Back Pad, Moorgate, Retford, Nottinghamshire. His father Edward was born in 1849 at Clarborough, Retford, he died in 1910 he was 61 yrs, his mother Ann O’Connor was born in 1857 at Liverpool they were married in 1875 at Blackburn, they went on to have 7 children. By 1901 John had joined the Army,

Military History

John enlisted at Retford on 9th October 1901 he was a labourer at the time and served with the 2nd Battalion King's Own Scottish borderers he enlisted with Caward Campbell (6734), a friend from St Saviour's School, which they both attended. Campbell was killed on 13 October 1914 the day before John who was killed on 14th October 1914. Both men are commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.

Extra Information

He had three brothers who also served; Jim in the 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters, and Charles in the Sherwood Rangers and Edward who served in the 2nd battalion Yorks and Lancaster regiment and who was killed in action on 15th September 1916.
