Family History

Francis Bowland was born Boughton, Manchester in 1897 the second of 4 children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Bo-land, all born in Manchter. By 1911 the whole family have moved to Chesterfield where the father, Thomas was working as a tailor residing at 5 Canal Terrace, Francis moved to Worksop 4 years later where his activities are reported in his obituary in the Worksop Guardian.

Military History

Pte. Francis Edward Boland Worksop Guardian 28 December 1917 On Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Low, of 237, Carlton Road, Worksop, received a telegram that their son-in-law, Pte. F.E. Boland had died in the Newcastle General Hospital on December 26th. The information was sent to deceased wife, who, unknown to the Hospital authorities, is working on munitions at Coventry. Pte. Boland was in the Northumber-land Fusiliers, having been transferred from the D.L.I. He joined the forces on February 7th this year, and was sent to France on April 18th, two days previous to which he married Miss Edith Low. In September he was sent to the New-castle General Hospital suffering from shell shock, and trench fever. He later developed pneumonia, from which he died on Boxing Day. His wife had seen him twice, and he seemed to be progressing very favourably. A native of Chesterfield, deceased came to Worksop in 1915. Prior to joining the forces he was employed at Oates’ Ltd. He was 21 years of age, and a very promising young man, making many friends in the short time he resided in the town.
