William Adlington was born in Sutton Road, Huthwaite, Notts in 1891 to parents George Burton Adlington and his wife Ada. William was the third of 4 children all born in Hucknall and spent most of his childhood living at Sutton Road. By 1911 the family had made a move to Worksop, now residing at 15 Carlton Road and William earning his living as a colliery banksman above ground.
William enlisted at Rotherham, achieved the rank of Corporal, was killed in action and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France At the time of Cpl. Adlington's death his battalion was engaged in a flanking operation to the Battle of Arras at Bullecourt. The Official History at page 465 states ,'The 2/5th, on the left, crossed the first line without recognizing it and entered the sunken Lagnicourt-St Martin road, but attempts to advance further were met by a fire so hot that a number of men remained in the road, while the majority fell back to the railway, carrying with them the bulk of the support battalions. The artillery barrage was brought back to the support trench ........and a new attack was launched , but it failed under heavy machine-gun fire.'
