Edward Powell

Pte Edward Powell Worksop Guardian 6 September 1918 A severe blow has befallen Mr and Mrs T Powell, Eastgate, Worksop, by the death in France of their youngest son, Pte Edward (Ted) Powell, Sherwood Foresters, one of the five soldier brothers, three of whom are on active service, and one of whom lies ill in hospital. Ted Powell, as he was familiarly known, would have been 21 today, and though he had not lived to come to a man’s estate, he, young as he was, had gone through three and a half years campaigning in France. He joined the Worksop Company of Volunteers when a boy of 16, and though he could have stopped at home when the Territorials were mobilised, he begged hard to be allowed to go to France, where his brothers were. He thus saw much active service with the Sherwood Foresters. He went though many engagements and escaped injury until Aug 25th, when he sustained severe shell wounds to the abdomen and thigh, and he died in a casualty clearing station. The news of his death was received with great regret and every sympathy is expressed with Mr and Mrs Powell and family in the loss they have sustained. Mr Powell’s eldest son, William, is a corporal in the R.G.A. He enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war. The second son, Capt George Powell DSO, Sherwood Foresters, was promoted in the field in recognition of his gallantry and distinguished service. Capt Powel was wounded early in 1915 and has had 14 years service. He has recently been home on leave and received congratulations of his old friends on the honour he has bought to his native town. The third son is Second-Lieut. T Powell, Sherwood Foresters, who was given his commission some time ago. Lieut. Powell was wounded on March 2nd this year and is at present on home service. The forth son, Sergt John Powell, Coldstream Guards, has been badly wounded and is still in hospital.
