Family History

Thomas Hollis was known to his family and friends as ' Hollis'. He was born in 1896 the son of Francis Charles Tomlinson Hall a farm foreman and Elizabeth Hall (née Haynes). Francis Charles Tomlinson Hall was born 3rd August 1856 in Wigsley, Nottinghamshire. He was first married in 1881 in Newark to Charlotte Shipman and they had two sons - George William Hall born 1884 Stapleford, Lincolnshire and Francis Charles Hall born 1886 Langford, Lincolnshire. Charlotte died in 1890 aged 34. On 15th April 1885, Francis married Elizabeth Cockerham (b. Burton on Trent 1868) at St Barnabus Church, Derby. They had seven children :- Thomas Hollis Hall born 1896 Wigsley, Cyril Headley Hall 1897, Gertrude Hall 1897 Asfordby,Robert Henry Haynes b1901 Asfordby Edith Hall 1905 Asfordby, Ethel May Hall b1906 Asfordby and Leonard J Hall born 1915 Arnold. In 1901 the family was living at 39, Peel Street, Derby, where Francis worked as a stableman and groom. The family finally moved to Bestwood around 1911. They lived at ‘Sunrise Cottage’, Bestwood. Cyril Hedley was a farm milk boy.

Military History

Thomas Hollis Hall enlisted at Kimberley, Nottinghamshire and was drafted to the Western Front in France on 2 March 1915. By the time of his death he had attained the rank of Sergeant. He was killed in action 14 October 1915 and was eligible for the 1915 Star, Victory and British medals. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France

Extra Information

Thomas's brother Cyril Hedley Hall known to his family and friends as 'Hedley' also served (2082) with 1/5th Bn Sherwood Foresters. He survived the war, moved to Spondon Derby, married twice and died in his 70's.
