Family History

Ernest was born in 1889 at Sneinton, Nottingham and was the son of Harry a lace packer and Emma Hind, née Cox of 6 Ford Street, St. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. His father Harry was born in 1865 at Nottingham and his mother Emma Cox was born also in 1865 at Nottingham they were married in 1887 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Annie b1887, Ernest b1889, Florrie b1891, Elsie b1895, Harry b1898, Albert b1901, Mabel b1905, and Bernard b1909 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 118 Flewitt Street, Nottingham and are shown Harry 46 yrs a lace packer, he is living with his wife Emma 46 yrs and their children, Annie 24 yrs a lace worker, Florrie 20 yrs a lace jennier, Elsie 16 yrs a lace jennier, Harry 13 yrs a scholar, Albert 10 yrs a scholar, Mabel 6 yrs and Bernard 2yrs of age. In the same 1911 census Ernest has left home and he is shown as being 21 yrs a private soldier in the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters as Crownhill barracks Crownhill, Plymton, Devon

Military History

Lance Corporal Ernest Hind, served with “H” Company, 3rd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, A pre-war regular, he landed in France with the battalion on 4th November 1914 and died at the Jeffrey Hall Hospital, Monkwearmouth, on 3rd December 1915. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.

Obituary published 6th December 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- HIND. – On December 3rd, at Jeffrey Hall Hospital, Sunderland, Lance-Cpl. Ernest Hind, 1st Sherwood Foresters, 35, Massey-street, aged 26 years. He did his duty.
