Thomas Goodacre and Sarah Cullen married in 1885 in Worksop, their first abode being 11 Crown Street, Worksop. Thomas, from as early as 16, spent his life working as a coal miner. By 1901 the family home was 9 Dock Road where they spent many years raising their 3 children, Mary Eliz, Ernest and William. The two boys later followed their father’s occupation of working in the coal mines. Ernest married in June of 1911 to Mabel Alice Johnson in Worksop and in 1915 a baby daughter, Hilda, was registered to them at Worksop.
Pte. Ernest Goodacre Worksop Guardian 21 September 1917 In the “Worksop Guardian” for June 8th this year, we stated that Pte. Ernest Goodacre, 12 Forest Yard, Worksop, of the 18th S. F., Lewis Gun Section, was reported “missing” as from April 23rd last, and now his wife has received official intimation that he is believed to have been killed in action on that date. Nothing further has been heard of him, and no trace has been discovered, so that there is unfortunately no room for doubt. Pte. Goodacre was 29 years of age, and leaves a widow and two children, aged five and two years respectively. Before the war he worked at Shireoaks Colliery, and he enlisted in January 1915, long before conscription was introduced. He was just home at Christmas time last year, and his last letter home was dated April 20th. He was a smart soldier and a gallant man. His only brother, William, enlisted at the same time, but was medically rejected. He was employed at Shireoaks. His three brother-in-laws are in the Army, two at present being in hospital, and one is in France. The latter is in the 28th S. F.; one of the two former is in the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, and the other was transferred to the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. Pte. Goodacre had many friends in Worksop, who will be sorry to hear of his death, and who will sympathise with the widow and children.
