Charles Johnson was born in 1896 at Hucknall under Huthwaite and was the son of George a coal miner and later labourer in coke ovens and Annie Johnson née Wakelin, of 414, Greenland Rd., Darnall, Sheffield. His father George was born in 1872 at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, his mother Annie Wakelin was born in 1872 at Morton, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1894, their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have the following children, Charles b1896 Hucknall, Albert b1900 Hucknall and Doris b1907 at Sheffield. In the 1901 census the family are living at New Tree Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite In the 1911 census the family are living at 414 Greenland Road, Darnall, Sheffield and are shown as George 39 yrs a labourer at coke ovens, he is living with his wife Annie 39 yrs and their children, Charles 15 yrs a grocers shop assistant, Albert 11 yrs a scholar and Doris 4 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Charles Johnson enlisted at Sheffield and served with the 2nd battalion Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. He died of wounds on 19th December 1915 and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, France.
