William Hunt was born in 1894 at Hucknall and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and his first wife the late Ann Hunt His father William was born in 1844 at Ilkeston and his mother Ann was born in 1843 also at Ilkeston, they had the following children, Sarah b1863, Elizabeth b1876 Thomas Henry b1880 Newstead, Beatrice b1888 Hucknall, Joseph b1891 Hucknall and William b1894 also at Hucknall. His father later C1894 re married Mary born 1864 at Longton, Lancashire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 46 Linby Lane, Hucknall and are shown as Thomas 67 yrs a coal miner unable to work, he is living with his wife Mary 47 yrs and his children, Thomas Henry 31 yrs a coal miner hewer, Beatrice 23 yrs a confectioner and shop assistant, Joseph 20 yrs a coal miner loader and Wiliam 17 yrs a coal miner After 1911 William moved to Yorkshire after the local collieries went on short time.
Private William Hunt enlisted at Doncaster, he served with the 1/5 battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 14th April 1915 and was killed in action on 25th May 1915. He is buried at White City Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France.
Six weeks later his father died, reportedly of a broken heart. And his sister, Beatrice, lost her husband at Gallipoli whilst serving with the South Notts. Hussars.
